Saturday Morning D+ Ride. 19.2miles @ 11 mph
Richard Radwanski (L), Mary Beth Yandrasitz
The weather conditions hadn't been this nice for a bike ride in quite a while. Ride start temps around 30 degrees, bright sun and no wind made for a great late winter morning. There were three C riders and two D Plus riders leave Memorial Lake State Park to enjoy the morning.
The D Plus route had us skirt Fort Indiantown Gap on backroads and connect with Fisher Ave at the east end of the gap. We continued east on Fisher and stopped for a break at the busy Love's Truck Stop adjacent to Rt 81in Lickdale. From there, we did a loop on Old Forge Rd and S Bordnersville Rd. In the past couple of years, this rural farm area along Routes 81 and 78 has been overtaken by many huge commercial warehouses. It remains a nice area for biking. Arriving in Bordersville, we crossed Fisher Ave onto N Bordersville Rd. We did a circle along the mountain on Fort Swatara Rd back to Bordnersville, then headed west through the gap back to Memorial Lake.
Considering the snow and cold weather conditions recently, the roadways on this route were remarkably snow and ice free. Minimal traffic, no problems, and beautiful weather made for a safe and enjoyable ride. With temps around 40 degrees, we ended our ride warmer than we've been in long time. C'mon spring!
