East Shore Flex

Thu. 4 Oct, 2018 1:00 pm
Ride Description:

Weather reports call for rain this evening but we're going to try to squeeze in an East Shore Flex ride this afternoon.  Ken Frohnert and I will be departing Boyd's Big Tree Preserve at 1pm.   Boyd's is located north of Harrisburg on Fishing Creek Valley Rd / Rt 443, approximately 2.5 miles east of 322/22.  From Fishing Creek Valley Rd, turn into the lane for Boyd's and go up to the top of the hill, where there is plenty of parking and a restroom.

Our route will be 25 to 30 miles and have approximately 1200 ft of climb.  Depending upon who shows up, we may climb up Appleby Rd.  Pace will be 12 to 13 mph and no rider will be left behind.

We will monitor the weather and cancel by Noon or shorten the ride if necessary.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 6 Oct, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Your regular leader (Rick) will most likely be away this week and I will be leading.  Let's meet at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Parking Area, 8:30 am, and plan to ride about twenty miles to the little cottages at Lake Strauss.  Terrain is the typical rolling hills of beautiful Lebanon County.  Distance will be about 22 miles and the average speed will be 9 to 11 mph dependent upon the group, but no one will be dropped.  The route is mostly rural with minimal traffic.

In the event of inclement weather, I will send a cancellation to the email distribution list and remove the ride from the HBC calendar no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable check your emails, or the club calendar, before you leave home, or call, text, email me.

I think you will like this ride and hope to see you there!

Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 6 Oct, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

This week's Saturday Morning Social ride will depart from the Lower Road parking area of Memorial Lake in East Hanover Twp, near Fort Indiantown Gap.  There is ample free parking at this location and restrooms.  The D+ ride led by Larry Riley will also be leaving from this location at the same time so you have your choice of rides.

Our route will be approximately 27 miles and will take us east around Fredricksburg and the Blue Mountain Golf Course.  RidewithGPS shows the elevation climb as just under 1200 ft.  There are no climbs on this route above 5% grade but you can expect rolling terrain that is typical of Central PA.

Our pace will be within the C range and probably between 12 to 13 mph.  We will stop as needed to regroup and there will be a bathroom break around the halfway point.  No rider will be dropped.

If you would like to preview the route, a link has been included below.  We may vary from this route if conditions require.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26487081

Weather forecast for Saturday morning calls for temperatures around 60 deg F at start time, warming up to about 65 deg F.  This is the "in between" time of year for biking clothing so we will stop after a few miles for clothing adjustments.  Winds are expected to be 5mph or below and there is less than 5% chance of rain.

In the unlikely event of bad weather I will send cancellation out by 7:30am.

Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common type of inherited ataxia. 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA gene. What begins as difficulty with balance and coordination progresses over a short period of time to a life altering loss of mobility, energy, speech and hearing, robbing children and young adults of the ability to live active lives. FA also presents serious risk of diabetes and life shortening cardiac disease. As of today, there is no treatment or cure. Fundraising to support FA research is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Sat. 20 Oct, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Several requests have been received to repeat last year's Halloween Ride, so let's meet at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Parking Area, for what will be our Second Annual Halloween Special.  We are doing it a week earlier this year because next weekend several of the regulars are going to the Williamsburg Ride.  Restrooms are available at the Lower Road Parking Area, as well as at some port-o-pots along the way.

Plan to ride about 28 miles of mostly rural roads thru many wooded areas around the remote outskirts of Fort Indiantown Gap.  When we reach Swatara State Park, we will ride down into the park onto the old abandoned highway (old Route 72), cross the Waterville Bridge on the Appalachian Trail, take a short break on the bridge, and leave the park on Old State Road.

There are some hills on this ride, especially during the first half, but that's part of the beauty and most ascents are followed with a refreshing descent.  None of the hills are killers and we have all done them (or similar ones) in the past.  Ride with GPS shows this route has an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and we will average between 12 and 13 mph.  My apologies to those who prefer to ride faster than 13 mph, but this is a C Ride.  We will encounter two very short areas of dirt or hard packed gravel on Tomstown and Old State Roads, but each area is less than a mile and road bikes have never had any difficulty on the hard packed areas.  Note: The recent rains have not been kind to Old State Road and there are two areas where we are probably going to have to dismount and carry our bikes around some water for 25 to 40 feet.

In recognition of Halloween, we will stop at a very old and allegedly haunted cemetery where the murder victim of the Blue Eyed Six is buried.  We will also stop at two other haunted cemeteries where four bodies of the six killers were buried after they were hung for the murder.  This is a true story about murder for money and I will provide more details before and during the ride, but if you want more information, you can Google "The Blue Eyed Six".

The D Plus ride is starting at a different location and that ride announcement is available on the club website.

Send me an email if you have any questions.  In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email and remove the ride from the club website no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages, call, or text me before you leave home.

I think you will enjoy this ride and we should be finished by noon.  I hope you can make it!

Experienced - – For the experienced group cyclist. Flat to hilly terrain. Average speed 13-15 mph, with distances typically 20-45 miles. One brief stop midway in ride and when necessary. No rider is dropped.
Pace: 13-15 mph
Terrain: Rolling
Ride Description: The Silver Spokes are a group of bicyclists who ride on Wednesdays. All are members of Harrisburg Bicycle Club and most are retired, hence a ride scheduled during the day. They schedule rides of 25 to 45 miles most of the year, and keep the pace to 12-14 mph. In keeping with HBC tradition, they often have lunch together after the rides

If you feel inclined, please join the Silver Spokes ride this Wednesday and make fun of one of HBC’s newest ride leaders; me! There is a first time for everything and this Wednesday appears to be as good as time as any to break this rookie in. This week’s 33-mile ride will depart from the Paxtang trail head of the Capital Area Greenbelt at 9:00am. With the cooler temperatures this time of year, 3 breaks are planned so clothing adjustments can be made and that early morning coffee can be liquidated from the body as needed.

We’ll start out heading north (counter clockwise) and view some of the improvements to the CAG as we make our way to the state hospital grounds, turning right onto the CAG extension towards Veterans Park with the first stop planned for Sheetz on Linglestown Rd (~10.5mi). Continuing east we will travel through Linglestown and Skyline View with a stop at the Turkey Hill on Allentown Blvd (~18.0mi). Our now southbound direction will have us passing Hoernerstown before turning west on the way to the 3rd planned stop at the Rutter’s store on Derry Street (25.5mi). Our route then has us going north of Rutherford, passing by “Official BBQ & Burgers” and Bishop McDevitt High School before making our way into Lawnton and the eastern area of Paxtang as we return back to the CAG trailhead.

Speaking of eastern area…I have checked with the county border agents and all you west shore folks can flash your HBC membership card while crossing the bridge and all crossing fee’s will be waved for the day and no passport or visa’s will be required. Well, no visa required unless that’s how you want to pay for lunch at City Line Diner which is where those that want to break bread together will gather. As of now, the forecast is reflecting a “precipitation free” ride. It may be a bit on the “brisk” side, but it is late October in central PA; layer accordingly. If the need to cancel should present itself, a ride cancellation notice will be sent out by 7:30am.

I work in the evenings and my not be able to respond in a timely manner…but you can leave a VM or text to 717.564.7650 if you have any questions relative to the ride (ride related questions only please, I can not provide the meaning of life but I do believe it involves a bicycle).
