Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 2 Dec, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

We're looking to get the casual or first time riders out this Saturday.  If you haven't had your bike out for a while, this is your ride. If you've never ridden in a group or on the road, and want to try it, this is your ride. If you hate hills, this is your ride. We'll begin at 9am and do two circuits starting at the Middle Road Lot at Memorial Lake State Park. The park has heated restrooms. Our first circuit will be about 7 miles and run from Memorial Lake to Levitz Park and back on very rural roads and pathways. The terrain is as flat as it gets in south-central Pa. You can quit after this first circuit if you tire, or have other obligations.  The second circuit will cover the same route, however we can add a couple of extra miles at the end if the group so desires. Total distance will be about 15-? miles in distance. The speed will be group dictated,  so no one will get dropped.  We'll take as many breaks as necessary.  So, pump up your bike tires, get your helmet dusted off, grab some cool weather clothing, fill a water bottle, and show up for a good riding experience. Temps are predicted to be in the 30's at ride start time with some sunshine. Riding on these roadways in the countryside beats pedaling that bike in your basement. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 8:00am.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 2 Dec, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Saturday is December 2nd...here's your chance to say you rode into the last month of 2017!

This Saturday's C ride will depart at 9:00 a.m. sharp from the Conewago Recreation Trail parking lot on Route 230 northeast of Elizabethtown.  However, this is NOT a trail ride and we will be on paved roads the entire route.

The address of the departure point is:

Conewago Recreation Trail
2385 N Market St
Elizabethtown, PA 17022

Since we are not actually using the trail, and that parking lot can get full at times, please park in the lot next door in front of the abandoned GettyMart.  There is a porta-potty located in the trail head parking lot.

Our route will take us northeast on back roads into Mt Gretna, where we will have a break at mile 13.  We will then return via Route 241, which will include a brief dip into the outskirts of Elizabethtown.   Total distance will be about 27 miles.  Elevation climb is estimated by Ride With GPS at 900 ft.  While this is relatively low climb for a 27 mile ride, please be aware that there are two 6% climbs on this route.  For reference, the first climb is Hill Rd and we've done that many times on rides in this area.

As a reminder, this is a C ride and I'm going to be extra diligent about staying within a C pace.  If you choose to ride faster you will likely be well ahead of the rest of the group and therefore not on the club ride.  I want to make sure that all C riders are along for what should be an enjoyable route.

In the event of bad weather I'll cancel by 8am.  For questions I can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.or 717-982-1706 (text or call).

Hope to see you Saturday!

CANCELLED East Shore Flex

Tue. 5 Dec, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

On Tuesday Dec 5th I will lead an East Shore Flex ride, departing at 9:00 a.m. from the Boyd Big Tree Preserve parking lot.  There is no street address for this location but it is directly off Fishing Creek Valley Rd, about 3 miles east of Fort Hunter.  There is a rest room at this location.

Our route will take us east on Fishing Creek Valley Rd (Rte 443), south through the Manada Bottom area, and then looping around Penn National, with a return west on Fishing Creek Valley Rd.  There will be a break stop along the way with a rest room.

Current weather forecast calls for temperatures in the high 40's with little sunshine. Please bear in mind that we will be on the north side of the mountain where it tends to feel a few degrees cooler, so dress appropriately.  Rain is forecast for around 1pm but we should be back well before then.

Pace will be 12 to 13 mph, with elevation climb estimated at 1100 ft.  Distance will be around 30 miles although we will flexibility to cut that shorter if weather conditions change.

Ride Description:

We'll start Saturday morning at 9:00am from Memorial Lake State Park, the Middle Road Lot parking area. Restrooms are available at the park. The morning weather forecast indicates rather cold ride start temps, probably in the high 20's, so dress warmly. After a mid-ride break there, we'll head east past the Penn National/Hollywood Casino complex and back to Memorial Lake. Speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. Total distance will be approximately 18 miles. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary. Saturday Morning C

Sat. 9 Dec, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Boyds to Hollywood Casino

Stats:    32 miles (1,260 ft.)

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Boyds Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area (A.K.A. Boyds Big            Tree Farm)

At 9:00 AM we’ll be starting at Boyd’s Big Tree Farm parking lot in Fishing Creek Valley and heading east which means we’ll miss the 2 hills on Route 443 that are to the West closer to Fort Hunter.  We’ll be taking a scenic ride heading east through Fishing Creek Valley to Manada Gap and then to Hollywood Casino.  The ride out will be along Route 443 and a number of side roads…some familiar and some not.  The entire ride back will be along Route 443 which is a net downhill (with the exception of Route 443 to the parking lot)!

Restroom facilities are available at Boyds.  We’ll take a scheduled break at the half-way turnaround.  I anticipate that we’ll finish pretty close to 12 mph.  No one will be left behind.  And yes, depending on how everyone is feeling, we can very easily cut the ride back to under 30 miles.

The current weather forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 38 degrees.  But, it’ll be pretty cool first thing in the morning so bring your winter riding clothes…as if anyone needed reminded of that!

For directions, you can enter “Boyd Big Tree Preserve” in Google Maps and it'll get you there.  Boyds is located on the south side of Route 443 about halfway between Fort Hunter and Blue Mountain Parkway.

The D+ group will be starting at a different location.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.  Its been a while since I’ve been able to join you on a Saturday ride.

I'll cancel by 8:00 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Mon. 11 Dec, 2017 1:30 pm
Ride Description:

Harrisburg Greennbelt Ride

Due to scheduling, we need to start this ride a little later in the afternoon at 1:30 PM and likely keep it under 25 miles.  So, we'll do the entire Harrisburg Greenbelt which will give us a few options to add some mileage depending upon timing.  It looks like a reasonable afternoon for a bike ride with a high temperature of 38 degrees and a west wind of only 6 mph.

We'll meet at the Greenbelt trailhead at the intersection of Derry Street and Park Terrace near the City Line Diner.  We'll start 1:30 PM.

See you then.
