Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 5 Aug, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

We're going to start this week's ride from a new location, Swatara State Park, located in the Lickdale Pa. area. The location is basically on the east end of Fort Indiantown Gap, a bit of a drive from the Harrisburg area, however I believe you will think the route is worth the drive. There is no park address, so directions are: take I81 north from the Harrisburg area to exit 90, Rt72 Lebanon/ Lickdale. At the exit traffic light, turn left onto Fisher Ave, travel .1 mile to the traffic light at Rt72. Turn left and travel about 1 mile, turn right onto Monroe Valley Rd. A few hundred yards later, take the first right turn into the Lickdale Trailhead and travel along the lane until reaching the parking area. We'll be riding from Swatara Park northeast through the Monroe Valley to Lake Strause. We'll then return past our start point at about the 8 mile mark, travel through Bordnersville and the Lickdale area, before returning to the park. This is a beautiful area to ride with rolling hills. Total distance will be about 18 miles and speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 7:30am.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 5 Aug, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Lake Strause (In Reverse)

Stats:    28 mi and 1,320 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Memorial Lake – Lower Road

We’ll be starting at Lower Road at Memorial Lake at 8:30 AM.  Bathroom facilities are available at Lower Road, mile 11, and mile 22.  We’ll take a scheduled break at beautiful Lake Strause around mile 15.   No one will be left behind.

We’ll take mostly country roads as we ride east to Lake Strause and back to Memorial Lake.  For those of you who have done this ride before, we’ll be doing it in reverse order…Ken told me it is perfectly flat in that direction.  We’ll have to start calling this the “3-Lake Ride” for Memorial, Marquette and Strause Lakes.

The D+ group will be starting at a different location.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 12 Aug, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Let's meet this week at the Palmyra Borough Municipal Building, 325 South Railroad Street, Palmyra, PA 17078.  This ride will be the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Club's Tour de Farms route which is a 29 mile loop from Palmyra to Colebrook and back.  Pace will be in the average range of 12-13 mph as we weave in and out of the scenic farmlands of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. There is one significant hill and a few small ones, but no one has ever had trouble with the hills. There will be a rest stop about half way in Colebrook at the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail where there is a port-o-potty.

We'll also stop a few minutes for reverence at the Three Red Bikes display that recognizes the horrific incident where three fellow cyclists were injured by a (________) hit and run driver - fill in the blank with enraged, angry, intoxicated, impaired, insane, deranged, perhaps all of these conditions, or choose your own words.

This ride usually takes less than three hours, including breaks, and we should be finished about 1130 am.

in the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email message no later than 7:00 am Saturday morning. If the weather is questionable, check your emails, call or text me before you leave home.

Hope you can make it!

Life has been crazy lately for me and I finally am getting around to scheduling a Saturday Trail ride.  Although I have plans for Saturday Trail rides on Aug 19, Sep 30  and Oct 7, I am going to schedule these a week out instead ahead of time because of my life challenges.

Join me for a ride on the beautiful Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, starting in Koser Park (small lot - 107 Race St, Bainbridge, PA).  Mileage is up to the party riding that day – Marietta or Columbia with a stop in Marietta at pub we vote on for lunch.  Please let me know by 7:00 pm, Friday 8/11, if you plan on joining me and if you are meeting me there or carpooling.

If foul weather is apparent, ride will be canceled in an email by 8:00 am on day of the ride.  My email is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and my phone number is 717-329-3231.

If you wish to carpool/caravan  – meet at Hampden Shopping Center (corner of Carlyle Pike & Sporting Hill Rd) at 9:00 a.m. - parking lot away from the Theatre.

NOTE:  These meandering rides are just that, meandering - slow, lingering, stopping for photo ops and viewing the nature with no set ending time adventures!  If you need to return by a certain time, please feel free to turn around when you need to (ya can't get lost if you stay on the trail)!

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 19 Aug, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Swatara Park Via Tomstown Road

Stats:    28 mi and 1,300 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Memorial Lake @ Lower Road

We’ll be starting at 8:30 AM at Lower Road at Memorial Lake where bathroom facilities are available.  Additional facilities are available around mile 19.  We’ll take a scheduled break around mile 16 with additional unscheduled shorter breaks.  I anticipate that we’ll finish pretty close to 12 mph.  No one will be left behind.

This ride has the typical amount of climb for our area…nothing bad and nothing flat.  We’ll hit the short & steep Marquette Lake hill once we are warmed up at about 4.5 miles.  From there, we’ll do our only significant climb on McLean, Coldsprings and Tomstown Roads which we’ll crest at about mile 8.  Then, it’s over and it’s pretty much rolling topo for the rest of the ride.  From Tomstown Road, we’ll head to Swatara Park where we’ll take our scheduled break.  We’ll have less than 1 mile on a partially stoned road under I-81.  We’ve all ridden this patch on road bikes with no issues as long as we take our time.  From there, we’ll head back home.  The whole ride is along beautiful wooded/farmland areas in Lebanon County.

For directions, you can enter “Lower Road and Boundary Road” in Google Maps and it'll get you to the parking area.

The D+ group will be starting at the same location and time so you can easily choose between the 2 rides.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

HBC Ice Cream Social

Sat. 19 Aug, 2017 6:30 pm

HBC Ice Cream Social, Saturday, August 19  6:30 p.m.

Eckels Ice Cream Fountain, 36 E. Main Street, Mechanicsburg. Parking at the Arch Street municipal parking lot.

Bring the whole family for this cool ride around the Borough of Mechanicsburg.  We will begin at the Arch Street Municipal Parking lot at the corner of N. Arch Street East Strawberry Alley. We’ll ride at a leisurely pace for about 10 miles on quiet, residential streets. Shorter ride options are available for those who need them.  The real treat comes afterwards when we get some ice cream at a very special place, Eckels Ice Cream Fountain in downtown Mechanicsburg. Eckels retained the old fashioned soda fountain and wooden bench seats that were part of the original pharmacy run by the Eckels family since 1879. They even kept some of the old products and showcase them in their small pharmacy museum.  And they offer the old time soda fountain concoctions, too, like phosphates, egg creams, floats and more.  Eckel’s is also well known for being featured in the movie “Girl Interrupted”, and memorabilia from the movie can be found inside. Eckels has more substantial fare on their menu too, such as soups and sandwiches. For more information about Eckels, go to http://www.eckelsicecream.com/index.html

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 26 Aug, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Join us this week at Memorial Lake State Park, Lower Road Entrance, and plan to ride about 25 miles at approximately 12 mph over the beautiful rolling hills of Lebanon County.  There are restrooms available before and after the ride at the Lower Road Entrance parking area.

We did this ride about a month ago and everyone seemed to enjoy it.  There is no real destination, just a 25 mile loop out to the Union Water Works area of Ono and back.  It is on mostly country roads thru farmlands and wooded areas with some very nice scenic views on some of the roads.  We usually see some wildlife, as well as many horses and farm animals.     There is only one fairly steep hill on Black's Bridge Road, but we have climbed this hill many times in the past and no has ever really had any difficulty with it.

In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email to the distribution list no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable check your emails, call, or text me before you leave home.

I think you will enjoy this ride and hope you can make it.

If you are interested in a little shorter ride, the D Plus group is starting at the same time and location.  Check that distribution list email or the website calendar for those details.
