From the location of the (now burnt down) Grantville Diner at the intersection of Rt 22 and Sandbeach Road.  Go north on Sandbeach Road, about one half mile to Jonestown Road.  Make a left.  Go about 200 yards.  At Manada Gap Road, make a right.  Go 150 feet or so and make a left into the Parking lot of East Hanover Park and Township Municipal Center.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 3 Jun, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:  Middletown River

Stats:    28 mi and 1,100 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Hummelstown Park N Ride

This is one of our favorite rides out of the Hummelstown/Hershey area.

We’ll be starting at the Hummelstown Park N Ride where bathroom facilities will be located just across the street at the 7-11.  We’ll take a quick ride through the beautiful Borough of Hummelstown to the paved Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail.  Then, we’ll climb a few hills (all of us have easily tackled more difficult hills) before our long descent to the Susquehanna River at Middletown where bathroom facilities will be available at the 18 mile mark.

We’ll get to ride along the Susquehanna River before entering Middletown, ride by the M&H Railroad and then a flat ride along the Swatara Creek before finishing with the balance of the Eshenour Trail before returning to Hummelstown.

For directions, you can enter “2nd and N Hanover” in Google Maps and it'll get you there. The Park N Ride is at the NW corner of 2nd St. and North Hanover Street which is 1 block north of the square in Hummelstown just before entering the railroad underpass.

The D+ group will be riding out of Memorial Lake on Saturday morning.

I'll cancel by 8:00 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Learning to Linger Email Ride

Tue. 6 Jun, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

LTL Capitol Tuesday Tour ... we'll take a short ride from the Camp Hill Borough building at 2145 Walnut Street, Camp Hill ... meet in front of the building across from the Fire station and Cemetery ... to our PA Capitol for one of the half-hour formal tours of the building followed by a short ride up to the Italian Gardens and back to City Island and across the Market Street bridge to our start ... we could also go up Walnut Street on our return ... easier than you might expect for an overview of the City and the Susquehanna River.

Total distance ... about 12 miles.  Make it longer by meeting at my house, or on the corner of St. John's Drive and Carlisle Pike by 8:15am and add another 8-10 miles.

Lunch after the tour in the Capitol building or nearby or after the ride on the West Shore.

This is a terrific tour ... I've done it half a dozen times already and learn something new each time.  This week our tour was delayed because of the budget negotiations are hopefully coming to fruition this week and are elected officials were busy with the camera crews telling us all about it.

Event Description:

We are a nonprofit that provide critical home repair for low income residents.  All proceeds go to home projects.  This is our third year and we are trying to grow our event.  We have a nice course with one rest stop and 4 loops that cloverleaf out and back.  The full century is a little over 6,000 feet of climbing.  Lots of rollers, no mountains.

We are located in the Shenandoah Valley.  Staunton is at the junction at Route 81 and Route 64.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 10 Jun, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Memorial Lake to Koons Park

Stats:    29 mi and 1,265 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Middle Road at Memorial Lake

NOTE NEW STARTING TIME OF 8:30.

We’ll be starting at the Middle Road parking at Memorial Lake where bathroom facilities are available.  We’ll take mostly country roads to Koons Park near the Linglestown square (I guess it’s really a circle now) and take a break where bathroom facilities are once again available.  Then, we’ll wind our way through some more back roads to Route 443 and take it back to Memorial Lake, hopefully with the wind at our back as we head east.

For directions, you can enter “Boundary Road and Middle Road” in Google Maps and it'll get you there. Please park in the northern section of the parking lot furthest from the lake.

The D+ group will also be riding out of Memorial Lake on Saturday morning at the same time.  So, you can easily choose between the 2 rides.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 17 Jun, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Memorial Lake to Lake Strause

Stats:    28 mi and 1,320 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Lower Road at Memorial Lake

NOTE NEW STARTING TIME OF 8:30 AND STARTING LOCATION OF LOWER ROAD.

We’ll be starting at the Lower Road parking area at Memorial Lake because our normal parking area at Middle Road will be busy with pavilion rentals.  But, don’t fear, we’ll be able to use the Middle Road bathroom facilities as usual at the beginning and end of our ride.  Lower Road is the lake access road nearest to Clement Avenue just off Boundary Road.  When we typically ride out of Middle Road, we make a left onto Boundary Road as we leave the parking lot and then a right onto Clement Avenue towards Marquette Lake.  Lower Road is on the left just before Clement Avenue.  You can also enter “Boundary Road and Lower Road” in Google Maps and it’ll get you there.

Last week we headed west towards Koons Park, this week we’ll head east to Lake Strause.  We’ll take mostly country roads to Lake Strause which is a beautiful lake tucked in the Monroe Valley where we’ll take a break at the 15 mile mark.  Then, we’ll wind our way back to Memorial Lake on mostly different roads.  This is a typical ride for us with a few hills that we have all ridden before.  Bathroom facilities will be available at miles 11 and 21.

The D+ group will also be riding out of Memorial Lake on Saturday morning at the same time.  So, you can easily choose between the 2 rides.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 17 Jun, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

NOTE THE RIDE START TIME AND NEW LOCATION - 8:30 AM FROM THE LOWER ROAD, MEMORIAL LAKE STATE PARK

We'll start Saturday morning at 8:30am from Memorial Lake State Park, the Lower Road parking area. The entrance to the Lower Road lot is marked and adjacent to the church on Boundary Road, just north of our normal Middle Road start location. Restrooms are available at the Lower Road parking area. Plan on riding from the park west to the Manada Gap area and back. Total distance will be about 19 miles and speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary. The C ride group will start at the same time and place, if you desire a faster pace and longer distance. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 7:30am

The 5th Annual Pennsylvania Hope Ride will be held June 24 & 25, 2017.

MAJOR ROUTE CHANGE FOR THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY RIDE:

This year, the ride starts and ends at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Hershey, PA.

Day 1:  Hershey to Kutztown (Approximately 70 miles, with an option of 100 miles. Starting at the Hope Lodge in Hershey PA, ride through the scenic farmlands of central Pennsylvania and finish the day at Kutztown University

Day 2:  Kutztown to Hershey (Approximately 70 miles). Pedal back across central PA on different rural roads through farmlands and quaint small Pennsylvania towns, completing the ride back at the Hope Lodge in Hershey, PA.  At the finish will be a celebration party for riders, their family and friends.

By participating in this event, you will help to create a world where cancer never steals another year from anyone’s life. The funds you raise will help support the Society’s potentially lifesaving programs and services, like the Hope Lodge program. Saturday Morning C

Sat. 24 Jun, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Southeast Loop

Stats:    29 mi and 1,200 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Briarcrest Mall Parking Lot In Hershey

NOTE NEW STARTING TIME OF 8:30.

As a change of pace for a Saturday morning ride and to start closer to Harrisburg due to the possibility of showers, we’ll be starting at the Briarcrest Mall parking lot in Hershey where bathroom facilities are available.  We’ll take mostly country roads towards the Conewago Trail but we will not ride the trail.  I like this ride because the roads are mostly in pretty good riding shape…smooth!

The Briarcrest Mall parking lot is located behind the Turkey Hill which is right across the street from the Hershey Medical Center.  For directions, you can enter “Briarcrest Drive and Centerview Lane” in Google Maps and it'll get you there.

The D+ group will be riding out of Memorial Lake on Saturday morning at the same time.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Ride Description: Saturday or Sunday "ad hoc" social rides (not EVERY week) in which we carpool/caravan to a trail/route outside the immediate metropolitan Harrisburg area or have weekend camping/biking adventures. Travel to venues will range from 45 minutes to 3 hours away. These are C/D+ rides which will have a 9-13 mph average and range from 20-45 miles.

Join Mary for a cycling/camping extended weekend, Friday, June 30th (set up camp) to Wednesday, July 5 (break down camp in the morning).   We will ride the Ghost Town Trail in  Nanty-Glo plus take a  field trip to ride the Three Rivers Heritage Trail around the City of Pittsburgh.  The campground I found is about 20 minutes from Ghost Town Trail and about 1 hour from Pitt (and, I would hope, better than the one we stayed in a couple summers ago!).  The rates on the website say 2016, but still valid for 2017 and they are pet friendly.   If you know of another campsite option, please let me know!
