Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 9 Feb, 2019 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:    Fort Hunter Loop

Stats:     Approx. 30 mi (Approx 1,200-1,300 ft)

Speed:   11-13 mph

Start Location:  East Hanover Community Park

At 9:00 AM we’ll be starting at the East Hanover Community Park where there is a portable bathroom.

Saturday will be a bit breezy with a NW wind.  Since it seems like most of our rides head east with the wind at our back and then west once the wind picks up later in the morning, we’ll reverse everything this time to take advantage of the wind as it picks up later in the morning.  From the start, we’ll head west to Fort Hunter winding our way through Linglestown before the winds begin to stiffen a bit later in the morning.  Then, we’ll head east on Route 443 (Fishing Creek Valley Road) once the wind picks up and pushes us back to our starting location.  This should be a welcome change to fighting a headwind on Route 443!

We’ll take a short scheduled break at Fort Hunter where bathrooms are also available.  I anticipate that we’ll finish pretty close to 12 mph.  No one will be left behind.

For directions, you can enter “East Hanover Community Park” in Google Maps and it'll get you there.  It’s located on the NW side of the intersection of Jonestown Road and Manada Gap Road.

The D+ group will be starting at the same location and time.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 16 Feb, 2019 9:00 am
Ride Description:

No idea what the current weather pattern will bring for conditions this Saturday morning. That being the case, we'll hopefully start this Saturday Morning's D Plus Ride at 9am from Memorial Lake State Park,  Middle Road Lot, 18 Boundary Road, Grantville Pa. 17028.

Plan on riding through Fort Indiantown Gap to the Lickdale area and back. We'll travel main roadways with large shoulders that are usually cleared of snow and ice quickly, as opposed to many of  the back roads we typically ride. Plan on riding about 18 miles at a D Plus pace, 9-11mph, both depending on conditions and riders present. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 8:00am.

Silver Spokes Email Ride

Wed. 20 Feb, 2019 10:00 am
Ride Description:

WEDNESDAY'S 2/20/19 SILVER SPOKE RIDE CANCELED

Really no point in delaying the inevitable…tomorrows scheduled Silver Spokes ride is canceled due to weather; I’ll try again in March. A different course will be planned in the hopes that will break the bad weather cloud hanging over the past 2 scheduled rides with this route. Take care, happy shoveling, and be safe!

WEDNESDAY'S 2/20/19 SILVER SPOKE RIDE CANCELED

Well, tried this last month but canceled because of a winter weather advisory for freezing rain and sleet. Not sure this Wednesday is going to fair much better based on the current forecast. Direct "cut and paste" from January's ride announcement. Only thing I'll add is that a ride cancellation notice will be sent by 8:00 am if the forecast does in fact hold true.

Weather doesn’t look promising for a Silver Spokes ride this Wednesday, but if we can fit it in, the planned point of departure for a 10:00am, 26.5 mile Fishing Creek Valley ride will be the Boyd Big Tree Preserve. The route will have us going east on Fishing Creek Valley Road/Mountain Road/Route 443 for about 10 miles before bearing right onto Manada Gap Rd, making our way past the Holiday Inn Grantville and ultimately the Exxon on Bow Creek Road for the only planned stop on the ride (~13.2 mile marker). After the stop, north on Bow Creek to get back to Mountain Road/Rt 443 and a left turn for the west return to Boyd’s. Lunch location can be decided on by the group.

Start/Stop Location: Boyd Big Tree Preserve, 1451 Fishing Creek Valley Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112
Start Time: 10:00 AM
Distance:  26.5 miles
Pace:  C pace (11-13 MPH, faster on decent, slower on climbs) – NO RIDER DROPPED!
Elevation Gain: 1,033’

Sat. 23 Feb, 2019 9:00 am

Once again, we have no idea what the roadway conditions will be like for this Saturday morning. That being the case, we'll start this Saturday Morning's D Plus Ride at 9am from Memorial Lake State Park,  Middle Road Lot, 18 Boundary Road, Grantville Pa. 17028. Restrooms are available at the park.

Plan on riding from the park around Memorial Lake, west to the area of Levitz Park, then back east to our starting point at Memorial Lake. Distance for this circuit will be about 10 miles. We'll then do a similar route over again, making for an approximate 20 mile ride total. Speed will be 9-11mph, with both distance and speed depending on the group. East Shore Flex

Tue. 26 Feb, 2019 9:30 am
Ride Description:

Looking at doing a 24 mile “bi-shore” ride this Tuesday the 26th starting at 9:30am at the Paxtang trail head of the Capital Area Greenbelt. This will be a “clockwise” ride, using the CAG to get us to the Market St bridge where we will dash over to the “other” shore and spend 11 miles touring the west coast (I hear its really nice this time of year). First planned stop will be the Sheetz at Erford & Poplar Church (~8.8 miles). Oyster Mill Rd & Magaro Rd will be used to take us by Adams-Ricci Park before heading south on Rt 15 and a return to the east shore via the Harvey Taylor Bridge. Continuing with the clockwise direction, up river will be the direction until turning right onto Maclay. 2nd planned stop will be the Sunoco at 2nd & Maclay (~18.3 miles). Small detour through the State Hospital grounds before resuming on the CAG and returning back to the Paxtang trail head.

Ridewithgps reflects 1,472’ of gain, however, I’m expecting it to be closer to 1,650’. Big climbs are up to Negley Park from the river (1.5 mi @ 2.3% avg, 6.5% max); Fairview & Country Club shortly after leaving Sheetz (~.75 mi @ 2.2% avg, 8.1% max); Magro Rd climb past the Conodoguinet Creek (~.6 mi @ 4.3% avg, 9.8% max); Margo Rd & Creekside to State St/Rt 15 (~.5 mi @ 4.4% avg, 8.6% max). There is also some climbing inside the State Hospital grounds. Final and most sustained climbing is leaving the hospital grounds on the CAG until getting to the east side of Reservoir Park (2 mi @ 2% avg, 7% max).

Advertising this as a C pace ride with the hopes to average 12 to 12.5 mph, however, being more of an urban ride, it may come in closer to 10.5 to 10.75.

Start/Stop Location: Paxtang Trailhead of The Capital Area Greenbelt (behind City Line Diner, 3302 Derry St, Harrisburg, PA 17111).
Start Time: 9:30 AM
Distance:  24.4 miles
