Saturday Morning C

Sat. 6 May, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Let's meet this week at Memorial Lake, Middle Road Entrance, and ride to the lake at Camp Strauss.  We will be taking some different roads because most of the Fort Indiantown Gap Roads are now off limits to bicycles.  The distance will be about 26 miles at 11-13 mph and there will be a few hills, but nothing too difficult.  Most of the roads are rural, country roads, but because of the new restrictions at Fort Indiantown Gap, we will have a few miles on busier connecting roads.  There are restrooms available at Memorial Lake and at a McDonald's at Love's Truck Stop, or we can stop at the Speedway in Lickdale.

In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email no later than 8:00 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages, call or text me before you leave home.

If anyone has questions or needs better directions, send me an email, call or text at contact information below.  Hope to see you there because I think you will like this ride!

Note: This week the D Plus Ride is not starting from the same location as the C Ride.  If you are interested in that ride, check the D Plus email announcement or read about it on the website under Upcoming Rides.  Everyone is welcome to join the ride of their choice!

Sat. 13 May, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:               Memorial Lake                                                                                                                                   Stats:                TBD (Weather Dependent)                                                                                                                 Speed:              11-13 mph                                                                                                                                       Start Location:  East Hanover Township Municipal Building

The weather is iffy for this Saturday.  Some of the computer weather models are showing a chance of intermittent showers while some are showing a full blown nor'easter with wind and heavy rain.  In any event, it's likely to be cool and potentially dry, damp or wet.  So, we'll schedule a ride now but please check your emails for any changes.

We'll be riding to Memorial Lake.  We'll meet at the East Hanover Township Municipal Building (intersection of Jonestown Road and Manada Gap Road) where there are restrooms and a covered pavilion.  It'll be up to about a 27 mile ride but we'll have many opportunities to cut the ride short if the radar shows incoming rain.  We'll be averaging 11-13 mph and no one will be dropped.

The D+ ride will be leaving from Memorial Lake, not the East Hanover Township Municipal Building.

I'll cancel no later than 8:00 AM on Saturday if the weather is not suitable for riding.  So, please check your emails accordingly.

Feel free to text or call me at 717-805-1251 if you have any questions.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 13 May, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

The weather forecast for this Saturday doesn't look very favorable, so let's try this plan. We'll start Saturday morning at 9:00am from Memorial Lake State Park, the Middle Road parking area. Please park closest to the entrance/exit, the area farthest from the lake. Restrooms are available at the park. Plan on riding a few shorter circuits around the Memorial Lake area. If the weather cooperates, we can complete several circuits and get 15 - 20 miles in. If the weather curtails the ride, the circuits will at least keep us near our starting location. Speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 8:00am

Event Description:

The Maryland Endurance Challenge is a charity cycling event that will be held on May 20th 2017, in order to raise funds for SHIP (the Student’s Homeless Initiative Partnership of Frederick County).  SHIP provides relief and support to the hundreds of Frederick County Public School (FCPS) students who are encountering homelessness.

The format of the event is a 12-hour endurance ride (i.e. “how far can you ride in 12 hours”), with 6-hour and 3-hour options.  It will be based on the Mount St. Mary’s University east campus in northern Frederick County.

We are expecting hundreds of cyclists to join the ride.  Some of them are highly accomplished ultramarathon competitors who will probably achieve distances in excess of 200 miles on the day.  The event is part of the annual “World Cup of UltraCycling”, and is affiliated with the internationally-recognized Ultramarathon Cycling Association (UMCA).

More important, we’re also inviting regional cyclists and the general public to join he event as a “fun ride”.  We are hoping to attract 200 cyclists, and each participant will pay an entry fee, and will be requested to raise funds for SHIP, to assist homeless school children in our area.

We hope you will be able to help us to raise awareness of this charity event

by spreading the word to the cyclists

in the Harrisburg area!

From Hershey.  Proceed North on Rt 39.  Crossover route 22.  After a mile or so, make a right onto Jonestown Road.  Go about 2 miles and turn left onto Manada Gap road.  Go 150 feet or so and make a left into the Parking lot of East Hanover Park and Township Municipal Center.

From the location of the (now burnt down) Grantville Diner at the intersection of Rt 22 and Sandbeach Road.  Go north on Sandbeach Road, about one half mile to Jonestown Road.  Make a left.  Go about 200 yards.  At Manada Gap Road, make a right.  Go 150 feet or so and make a left into the Parking lot of East Hanover Park and Township Municipal Center.

Event Description:

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club is invited to join with the York County Sunset Scramblers for another bicycle tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield on 20 May 2017.  We will meet at National Museum / Visitor's Center, Parking Lot # 3, at 8:45 and plan on a 9 AM departure.  The tour this time will focus on the Confederate's 3rd Day attack ( commonly known as Pickett's Charge ) and also the Union Cavalry's attack that same day on the southern end of the Confederate Line by BG Farnsworth.  This ride fit's the HBC's definition of a Class C with multiple stops at historical points of interest for comments explaining what happened.  Our typical rides finish about 3 PM and the total mileage covered will be slightly over 20 miles.  The ride will stop in downtown Gettysburg for lunch and is great for families wanting to spark an interest in American History.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 20 May, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:  Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

Stats:  29 mi and 700 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Falmouth Boat Launch

Yep, we'll try this beautiful ride again!  Last time we tried, we cancelled because the trail was flooded by the mighty Susquehanna.  The river forecast looks a lot better this time around.  Yeah.

For those of you who are new to the NW Lancaster County River Trail, the "trail" is new asphalt in great condition.  Road bikes are suitable.  The trail runs along the banks of the Susquehanna with nice views of the river, woods and fields.  And, there are 2 eagles nests...one at Falmouth and one between Bainbridge & Marietta.  The second one offers about as good of a chance that you'll ever get to see eagles up close at about 40 yards.  After passing through Bainbridge and Marietta, we'll stop at the Columbia Crossing River Trail Center where there are restrooms, vending machines, seating and great views of the river.  Then, we'll turn around and retrace our route back to Falmouth where restrooms are also available.

For directions, you can enter Falmouth Boat Launch in Google Maps and it'll get you there.  Its a 14 mile car ride from our house in Lower Paxton Township. Its on the right hand side (west side) of Route 441 just south of TMI.  Be alert, the right turn onto Collins Road down to the boat launch comes at you pretty quick.  So, look for the cell tower adjacent to Rt 441 on the right just before turning right onto Collins Road.  Also, look for signs to the Fallmouth Boat Launch and the NW Lancaster County River Trail.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

We'll meet this week at the East Hanover Township Community Park, 8848 Jonestown Road, Grantville, PA 17028.  Full disclosure: After the ride that Al Brulo led last week on the Lancaster NWRT, I have a tough act to follow and there is nothing in my repertoire that comes close to it. Nevertheless, plan to ride 25 to 30 miles at 11-12 mph on mostly rural roads with rolling terrain. There will be a few hills, but no monsters.

So, consider making a bike ride part of your Memorial Day weekend plans and join us!  We are a friendly group and everyone is welcome.  If you prefer a little slower, shorter ride, the D Plus Ride is starting at the same time and location.  Here's an idea - if you or your spouse ride at different speeds, you can come together, join different rides, and meet up afterwards.  No need to worry, both groups treat everyone like family and take care of each other.

In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation notice no later than 8:00 Saturday morning. If the weather is questionable, check your emails, call, or text me before you leave home.

Let me know if you need additional information or have any questions.  Hope to see you Saturday morning!
