Saturday Morning C

Sat. 1 Jul, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

This week we'll start at the Conewago Trailhead on PA Route 230 between Middletown and Elizabethtown.  We do this ride a few times every year and it is a favorite of many riders.  There is an old abandoned Getty Gas Station adjacent to the Conewago Rail Trail parking area that is used for overflow parking.  Let's meet and park at this Getty Station so we can keep everyone together and avoid confusion with the trail users.

We will then take some scenic, paved backroads to Mt Gretna, take a short break, and return to our vehicles via the Lebanon Valley and Conewago Rail Trails.  Total distance is about 25.5 miles with 13.5 miles on paved country roads and 12 miles on rail trail.  Pace will be 11.5 to 12.5 mph on the paved roads and 10.5 to 11 mph on the trails.  Road bikes and hybrids are best suited for this ride.  The trail is mostly fine, hard packed gravel, but occasionally (not always) there are a few rough areas.  Road bikes have never had any difficulty with the trails, but if you don't like to ride your road bike on hard packed gravel, you should use a hybrid.  Mountain bikes will also work if you can ride it about 12 mph on normal pavement.  We should be back to our vehicles by 11:30 am.

It isn't a difficult ride with only one significant hill in the beginning when everyone is still fresh and then the return trip on the trails is mostly flat to slightly downhill.  It is supposed to be warm Saturday, but the trail section on the return trip is tree lined with lots of shady areas.

Directions:  From Harrisburg area, take I-83, merge onto I-283 south, then PA 283 east to the Toll House Road/PA 230 exit, then take PA 230 east toward Elizabethtown.  Go past Saturday's Market on your left and then past the Par Line Golf Course.  Watch for the old abandoned Getty Station on the left and park there.  A lot of our regular riders have said it doesn't take any longer to drive to this location than to Memorial Lake.  Its just sounds like it's farther.

Call or send me an email if you have any questions. In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email message no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages or call me before you leave home.  I think you will like this ride and hope you can make it.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 15 Jul, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

This weeks ride will be a version of last fall's First Annual Tour de Fall Foliage.  Obviously, there won't be any fall foliage in July, but the area is also very beautiful in summer.  We'll meet at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Entrance, where restroom facilities are available before and after the ride.

Plan to ride about 27 miles of mostly rural roads thru many wooded areas around the outskirts of Fort Indiantown Gap.  When we reach Swatara State Park, we will ride down into the park onto the old abandoned highway (old route 72), cross the Waterville Bridge on the Appalachian Trail, and leave the park on Old State Road.

There are some hills on this ride, especially during the first half, but that's part of the beauty and most ascents some with a refreshing descent.  None of the hills are killers and we have all done them (or similar ones) in the past.  Ride with GPS shows this route has an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and we will probably average about 11-12 miles per hour.  There are two very short areas of dirt or hard packed gravel, but each one is less than a mile and road bikes have never had any difficulty on the hard packed areas.

The D Plus ride is starting at the same time and location, so couples can come together and choose separate rides, if desired.

Call or send me an email if you have any questions.  In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email no later than 7:30 Saturday Morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages or call me before you leave home.

I think you will like this ride and hope you can make it!

This year's HBC picnic will be held at Fort Hunter Park on Front Street in Harrisburg on Sunday, July 16. HBC has rented the west pavilion on the riverside. Rides will be offered in the morning for all levels of rides from D to B, but there's plenty to do at the park even if you don't ride a bike. There's a great new playground, a downloadable self-guided walking tour map, tours of the Ft. Hunter Mansion, horseshoe pits and the opportunity to do some boating or tubing on the Susquehanna River. Bring the whole family!  https://forthunter.org

Lunch will be at 12:00 noon and HBC will provide the grilled chicken, hot dogs, water and Gatorade. Everyone who attends is asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Bringing a folding chair is a good idea, too. You can also bring lawn games or other activities. Relax and have a good time with friends. The pavilion is ours for the whole day.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 22 Jul, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Circle Deodate

Stats:    31 mi and 1,375 ft. climb

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Hummelstown Park-N-Ride

We’ll be starting at the Hummelstown Park-N-Ride at 8:30 AM where bathroom facilities are available in the local 7-11.  We’ll take a scheduled break around mile 15 with additional unscheduled breaks.  I anticipate that we’ll finish pretty close to 12 mph.  No one will be left behind.  The high temperature is predicted to be only 87 degrees which is way better than the 90's for the 4 days leading up to Saturday.  We'll be done riding well before 11:30 AM and, since it is daylight savings time, the sun will not reach its highest until 1:00 PM with that high of 87 coming even later in the afternoon.

We’ll take mostly country roads with lots of corn and soybean fields as we basically ride in a big circle around the thriving metropolis of Deodate.  Most of these roads are in real good shape making for a smooth ride.  There will be about 1,370 ft. of climb, which we have all done before, with a good portion of that coming on 2 hills.  The first hill starts around mile 8 and the second starts around mile 22.  So, we have time to warm-up before the first hill and they are spaced out nicely….and we finish on a real nice downhill!

For directions, you can enter “West 2nd Street and Cedar Alley” in Google Maps and it'll get you to the Park-N-Ride.  It is located within sight of the 7-11 at the intersection of West 2nd Street and North Hanover Street just 2 blocks north of the square in downtown Hummelstown.

The D+ group will be starting out of the East Hanover Park.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 22 Jul, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

We'll start Saturday morning at 8:30am from East Hanover Township Park, located behind the Township building at 8848 Jonestown Road, Grantville, PA. 17028. Entrance to the park is located on Manada Gap Road. Plan on riding from the park south across Rt22, then east into Lebanon county. We'll take a short break at Memorial Lake, then head back to East Hanover Park along some familiar rural roads. The route south of Rt22 involves some rolling hills and one slightly longer hill to climb. Total distance will be about 18 miles and speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. Saturday Morning C

Sat. 29 Jul, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

We will meet this week at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Entrance, where restrooms are available before and after the ride.  Plan to ride about 25 miles at 11-12 mph over the beautiful rolling hills of Lebanon County.

We are going to go out to the Union Water Works area of Ono and back.  We did this ride in mid April and everyone liked it.  It is on mostly country roads thru farmlands and wooded areas.  We will pass many horse and chicken farms, as well as many agricultural farms with some interesting barns.  Only one fairly steep hill on Blacks Bridge Road, but no one has ever really had any difficulty with it.

In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email to the distribution list no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your emails, call, or text me before you leave home.  Hope you can make it!
