Learning to Linger Email Ride

Tue. 3 Oct, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Start:  Ashecomb's / TJ Rockwell's, 896 W. Grantham Rd. off Rt. 15 ... park on far side (to right as face TJ's)

Learning to Linger, easy 10/11 mph ave. pace, 37 miles + 4 if go around via Huntsdale Fish Hatchery (if Montsera Road still under construction).  Shorter distance possible if meet at 09:30am (or so) at Ledeigh Park.  Will strive to leave no one behind but directions and a map are always helpful if you'd like to print out ahead of time.

Ashecomb's Kings Gap 37 Miles

This is my shorter route and avoids a few hills (Gutshall Rd. and Red Tank).

Lunch after at TJ Rockwell's if we make good time.  Break at the King's Gap General Store.  No plans to go to the top and back (adds 8 miles) unless the group wants to do this.

Questions ... give me a call or send me an email.

This ride is weather dependent of course and I will try to cancel by 7:30am if it looks like Mother Nature is having a bad day for us.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 7 Oct, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Saturday morning C ride for October 7, 2017

Departing at 8:30 a.m. from Conewago Recreation Trailhead at Route 230 outside Elizabethtown.  Street address is 2385 N Market St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.

Rather than fill up the Trail parking lot, please park in front of the abandoned Gettymart that is just next door to the Trail parking lot.

We will ride on paved roads northeast to Mt Gretna.  That portion of the ride is very gradually uphill, with two short climbs that should be no problem for C riders.  We'll take a break in Mt Gretna around mile 16.

Return leg will be via the Conewago Recreation Trail, which is packed cinders and generally fine for tires down to about 25 mm in width.  If the trail is muddy or you do not wish to return on the trail, I will have a return path via Route 241 available. The Route 241 return option is about 2 miles longer and includes one short, steep hill.

Total distance will be about 28 miles with about 825 of elevation climb. Pace will be around 13 mph and no rider will be left behind.

Current weather forecast shows a 30% chance of rain for Friday night / Saturday morning.  I’ll monitor and if necessary send out a cancellation by 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.  My contact info is 717-982-1706.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 7 Oct, 2017 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Saturday Morning D Plus Greenbelt Ride

Diane Riley has volunteered to co-lead the Saturday Morning D+ ride with me .  It will be my first Harrisburg Greenbelt ride and with her knowledge of the 20 mile loop around Harrisburg she assures me we will not get lost.  October is Breast Cancer Month....feel free to wear PINK. Diane is a 22 year Breast Cancer survivor and she would love to see the “fellows” in pink !  We welcome all to come out on what should be a gorgeous Fall day. This would be a wonderful ride to invite someone new to join us !

We will start the ride at 9:00 am at the Benjamin Olewine Nature Center at Wildwood Park, north of Harrisburg. Street address is 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110.  If you have not been to this location, best access is via the Cameron Street exit off I-81.  Turn right (west) on Wildwood Park Drive and go past the entrance to HACC, at which point the road curves to the right and becomes Industrial Rd.  Wildwood Way is just under the I-81 bridge overpass.  Turn right into Wildwood Way and park in the lot along the right side.

Plan on touring the Harrisburg Greenbelt, on paved, gravel, and trail roadways. The route includes a few hills, none of which are extreme. A hybrid bike would probably be best suited for this route, however road bikes shouldn't have any problems. Total distance will be approximately 20-22 miles. Speed will be 9-11mph, depending on the group. No one gets dropped and we'll take breaks as necessary along the route. Restrooms are available at several locations. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, 717-865-5707, or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Hope to see you Saturday morning. In the event of inclement weather causing a ride cancellation, notification will be sent out by 8:00am. You can also call Diane Riley 717 576-0003 or email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Diane will be providing some treats!  Like we say: We are an eating club with a biking disorder .

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 14 Oct, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:  Union Water Works Loop

Stats:    25.5 miles and 1500 climbing

Speed:   12-13 mph

We will meet this week at Memorial Lake, *Middle Road Entrance, where restrooms are available before and after the ride.  Plan to ride 25 to 26 miles over the typical rolling terrain of Lebanon County.  Speed will be 12 to 13 mph.  There is only one fairly steep hill on Black's Bridge Road, but we have climbed it many times and no one has ever really had any difficulty with it.  This is a rural ride thru farmlands and wooded areas with some nice scenic views.

The D Plus Ride is leaving from the same time and location for those interested in a little shorter or slightly slower ride.  If you and your spouse or significant other ride at different speeds, you can come to the start together, choose different rides, and meet up afterwards.

I think you will like this ride and hope you can make it!

In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email to the distribution list no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your emails, call, or text me before you leave home.

*Note:  For a variety of reasons the Memorial Lake Park personnel request that we use different parking areas on various days.  This week we are meeting at the Middle Road Entrance.

Learning to Linger Email Ride

Sat. 14 Oct, 2017 8:45 am
Ride Description:

Learning to Linger "Barner's Church 25-Mile Route".

Barner's Church 27-Mile Route

This is an easy-paced ride, 10/11 mph average pace with no one left behind following the original hard copy 25-mile route passed out years back.  Expect hills ... 1643 ft. of elevation climb altogether and the last one back to the church is a doozy but of course 'we've never seen a hill we could not walk".

Start Time:  08:45am ... ride will begin at 9:00am

Location:  5 Barner's Church Rd., Liverpool ... about 40 miles North of Harrisburg off Rt. 15.

Lunch after ... this is the "Apple Butter Boil" event ... chicken corn soup, corn-on-the cob, apple butter sundaes.

Weather could be a factor but you can always skip the bike ride and just enjoy the good food and buy a jar of Apple Butter.

HBC normally has a bunch of participants and informal rides for this ride and there will no doubt be other rides going out at the same time at a faster pace and for the 50 mile route too. Other routes are available ... 12 miles and 50 miles and hard copy directions and maps available if you get there early.  Note that there are no road markings or SAG support for any of the rides and some roads may lack signs so it's best to go with someone familiar with the area unless you're really adventurous.

Drop me a line if you plan to join me for the 9am start!

See HBC articles on the harrisburgbicycleclub.org for more information about the history of this event.

Event Description:

The Chairman to Chairman Cycling Challenge

To Support Fair Redistricting

October 28-29th, 2017

Starting in Everett, PA

Ending in Cranberry, PA and Lebanon, PA

My name is Jim Highland and I am organizing a cycling event for the last weekend of October. The Challenge is meant to help move legislation forward to make the redistricting of PA's voting districts more fair and transparent, and more representative of the people by having an eleven-member, non-politician panel coordinate redistricting, so that voters once again choose their politicians, instead of politicians choosing their voters.

LOGISTICS:  I am asking if you, and any of the cyclists you know in PA, would participate in the Chairman to Chairman Cycling Challenge, on the weekend of October 28-29th The distance is roughly 280 miles. The Challenge will begin at a half-way point between the route that links the offices of each of the Chairmen, with one team heading West and one heading East, each covering about 140 miles.  After talking with Paul Mathison, co-founder of Fair Districts PA, and the man who, in 2011, ran over 1000 miles around the state of Pennsylvania to promote fair redistricting, I've worked out a route that is good for cyclists, and has a starting point in Everett, PA (near Breezewood)  Cyclists from the Western part of the state (Team West) will head west and north, to Greensburg on Saturday, Oct. 28th, and on Sunday, Oct. 29th to Cranberry, PA (Rep. Metcalfe's home office).  Cyclists from the Eastern part of the state (Team East) will head East, to Gettysburg on Saturday, Oct. 28th, and on Sunday, Oct. 29th to Lebanon (Rep. Folmer's home office). Each "team" will cover roughly 140 miles total; so that should be very do-able in two days, Saturday and Sunday, ending at either Metcalfe's or Folmer's office.  We will make local and state media aware of the Challenge and coordinate with members of Fair Districts PA who live in the vicinity of the route, for supplies and support vehicles.

The nonpartisan, nonProfit, Fair Districts PA (FDPA), began in 2016  and helped introduce legislation to change the PA Constitution to eliminate the current five-member panel of party leaders, that currently carves up new districts every ten years, and instead, create an eleven-member panel of Pennsylvanians who are not elected officials, nor closely related to current politicians.  FDPA has held talks throughout the state to inform people about the new technologies of data-mining and precision-mapping that have allowed party leaders to create voting districts that keep them safe, locking out other people.  The districts are designed to favor one party or the other, instead of creating districts that allow politicians to more easily communicate with and represent their constituents' needs.  They also discourage politicians from voting their conscience, and encourage loyalty to the top party bosses.  Bills have been co-sponsored by almost half of the state representatives (both parties), but two chairmen are keeping them locked up in committees, so we cannot have debate or votes on them, even though they have a lot of support.

As members of FDPA have shown, even though Pennsylvanians cast roughly the same number of Democrat as Republican votes (we ARE a swing state), the way the lines are drawn can give us 5 Democrats and 13 Republicans in the US House of Representatives, or drawn another way, 5 Republicans and 13 Democrats.  Why allow a five person panel to do that to us, decade after decade?  Why discourage politicians from working across party lines?  Why not have a non-partisan panel that also includes people outside the two major parties, and specifically keeps out politicians and their families?  California was successful in doing this after a long struggle, led in part by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was tired of hearing politicians tell him that something was a “good idea” but that they just couldn't vote for it because of party bosses.  You can find out more at https://www.fairdistrictspa.com/ and by googling these issues on Youtube and Facebook.

If you are a cyclist or just want to help make this a success, please contact me, Jim Highland, FDPA, Mercer County local group, This email address is being protected from spambots. Thank you for supporting a fair, transparent redistricting process in Pennsylvania!
