Start Location: Koons Park
Climb: 1,430 ft.
Weather At Start: 56 degrees, overcast, and calm
Howard, Larry, Dave and Susan all rode their bikes to Koons Park and then back home again as they all got a few more miles in. In fact, we all rode an additional 4 miles to get bike cleats that some unnamed rider forgot. Luckily the mystery rider lived relatively close by…I’ve never been that lucky when I’ve forgotten mine.
There was the promise of 70 degree weather made by the weatherman but it was nowhere in sight at Koons Park. Instead, it was cloudy/foggy and a cool 56 degrees even though it was sunny in the low 60’s when we left our house just 3.5 miles to the south. But, 10 minutes into our ride the sun broke through and the temps rose to the low 60’s by the end of our ride. Just 10 miles further south at the official Harrisburg weather station, the temps rose to a record high of 77 degrees where the sun broke through 2 hours earlier. I wouldn’t want to be a weatherman trying to predict that crazy stuff!
We headed out to Memorial Lake while taking a few clothing adjustment breaks along the way…guess we’re still stuck in the cold weather mindset. Our eagle-eyed retired State Trooper spotted a young boy riding a motorized mini-bike on the public roads. Someone asked if he could catch the speeding scofflaw on his bicycle and Larry responded “I could if I wanted to”. Hmmm, that was the right answer.
We took our scheduled break at Memorial Lake which was still covered in soft ice and no ice fishermen. On our way back, Dave broke off to return to Chambers Hill. He gets the prize for the most miles.
We had a safe and enjoyable ride in the warm sunshine!
