East Shore Flex

Tue. 3 Jul, 2018 5:30 pm
Ride Description:

Name:   Symphony, Ice Cream and Fireworks

Stats:    TBD

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Briarcrest Parking Lot (Behind Turkey Hill)

Start Time:  5:30 PM (Not the usual 6:00 PM)

Yes, you read that right…free symphony, free ice cream and fireworks will be enjoyed at the Hershey Medical Center at the finish of our special combined East Shore Tuesday and East Shore Flex rides.   Read on to find out more!

We’ll move the start time up to 5:30 PM and we’ll start in the Briarcrest Mall parking lot.  This is located behind the Turkey Hill that is just across the street from the Hershey Medical Center.  We’ll do a 1 hour 45 minute bike ride so we can return to the parking lot by 7:15.  Hopefully, all of you workers will be sneaking out of work a bit sooner so you can join us for this earlier start time.  If you can only make it to the show, then join us at the show by looking for the group of sweaty people dressed in funny looking clothes on the lawn.

We’ll leave our bikes with our vehicles at Briarcrest (bring your bike locks, blankets, bug spray and a change of clothes) and walk across the street to enjoy the Independence Day festivities on the front lawn of the Hershey Medical Center.  The Hershey Symphony Orchestra starts playing at 7:30 until the fireworks at dusk.  If you haven’t seen the show before, the symphony sounds great and they always end with a fantastic patriotic show.  And, yes, free ice cream and water are involved.  There are also a number of food trucks.  And, if it’s your pleasure, many spectators layout quite a spread with food and wine.  It’s a fun family event.  You can see more details at https://hersheysymphony.org/2017-salute-to-america-concert-july-3/.

I'll cancel by 4:30 PM via email in the event of poor riding weather.  But, note that hot and humid does not qualify for poor riding weather!

Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 7 Jul, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

When and where are we leaving from?
8:30 a.m. sharp from the Conewago Recreation Trail location at 2385 N Market St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.

Where do I park?
In front of the abandoned GettyMart that is next door to the trailhead parking lot.  I believe there is a portajohn at the trailhead.

What is our route?
Approximately 27 miles, all of which will be on roads and not on the rail trail.  Expect a bathroom stop around mile 11 and a snack break in Mt Gretna.

Are there hills?
It’s Central PA…that means yes.   While this route has only 930 ft of elevation climb, there is a 6% hill in the beginning of the ride and another 6% hill towards the end of the ride.  Nothing a C rider shouldn’t be able to handle, and we’ll wait for you at the top.

Have we done this route before?
Yep, back on April 14.

What’s the pace?
Expect 12 mph to 13 mph.  Second half of this route is always faster than the first half.   We may designate someone to lead a faster group on the way back if necessary, but I’ll be staying with the standard C group.  No rider will be dropped.

What’s the weather forecast?
Perfect riding weather; mid 60’s to start and mid 70’s by the end. I’ll send out a cancellation by 7am if necessary.

Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 7 Jul, 2018 9:00 am
Ride Description:

Come out and join us this Saturday morning as Diane Riley leads us on a ride on the Harrisburg Greenbelt!

We will start the ride at 9:00 am at the Benjamin Olewine Nature Center at Wildwood Park, north of Harrisburg. Street address is 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110.  If you have not been to this location, best access is via the Cameron Street exit off I-81.  Turn right (west) on Wildwood Park Drive and go past the entrance to HACC, at which point the road curves to the right and becomes Industrial Rd.  Wildwood Way is just under the I-81 bridge overpass.  Turn right into Wildwood Way and park in the lot along the right side.

Plan on touring the Harrisburg Greenbelt, on paved, gravel, and trail roadways. The route includes a few hills, none of which are extreme. Saturday Morning D+

Sat. 14 Jul, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

I will be filling in this week for your regular leader (Rick) who will be off another week, or so.  Let's meet at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Entrance, at 8:30 am, and plan to ride about twenty miles out to the Swatara State Park area and back.  Terrain is the typical rolling hills of beautiful Lebanon County.  Distance will be about 20 miles and the average speed will be 10 to 11 mph dependent upon the group.  This route is mostly rural with minimal traffic.  If anyone is interested, we will check out the Marquette Lake Bald Eagles Nest, but we won't be climbing the hill on the backside of the lake unless everyone wants to do it.

The Saturday Morning Social C Ride is leaving from the same place at the same time, so couples can come together, ride different speeds and distances, and meet up later.  No worries, everyone is treated like family.  Mr. Wonderful is leading the C Ride!

I hope you can make it because I think you will like this ride!

HBC Picnic

Sun. 15 Jul, 2018 9:00 am

HBC Picnic

This year's HBC picnic will be held at Fort Hunter Park on Front Street in Harrisburg on Sunday, July 15. HBC has rented the west pavilion on the riverside. Rides will be offered in the morning for all levels of rides from D to B, but there's plenty to do at the park even if you don't ride a bike. There's a great playground, a downloadable self-guided walking tour map, tours of the Ft. Hunter Mansion, horseshoe pits and the opportunity to do some boating or tubing on the Susquehanna River. Bring the whole family!  https://forthunter.org

Lunch will be at 1:00 p.m. and HBC will provide the grilled chicken, hot dogs, water and Gatorade. Everyone who attends is asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Bringing a folding chair is a good idea, too. You can also bring lawn games or other activities. Relax and have a good time with friends. The pavilion is ours for the whole day.

Ride schedule:

8:00 a.m.  B Ride   40-50 miles Leader: Mark Riordan

9:00 a.m. C+ Ride  30-40 miles Leader: RIDE LEADER NEEDED

Bad weather may cancel the rides, but the picnic is held rain or shine. See you there!

Ride Description:

Name:   Sheetz To Columbia Via NW Lancaster River Trail

Stats:     48 miles @1,330 ft. or 29 miles @ 730 ft. (Your Choice)

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  New Sheetz At Middletown Road/Stoverdale Road, Derry Township

At 10:00 AM we’ll be starting at the new Sheetz parking lot in Derry Township and biking to Columbia along the Susquehanna River.  Lori and I are using this as a training ride for the August Cancer Research Bike 100 Mile Tour that is being coordinated by Scott Silverstein and Howard Ross.  So, please join us especially if you are doing the Cancer Research ride.

There is an option for you to meet us at the Falmouth Boat Launch which would cut about 19 miles off the ride resulting in a total ride of 29 miles.  You would meet us at Falmouth at 10:45 AM.

We'll be stopping for lunch in Marietta around noon.

Here’s the Readers Digest version of the route:  We’ll start at Sheetz and ride along Middletown Road to Middletown.  There we’ll take Route 441 to Falmouth and pickup any bikers at the boat launch.  We’ll again take Route 441 to Bainbridge where we’ll hop onto the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.  We’ll take the trail to Marietta and then to Columbia where we’ll take a break at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.  Then we’ll bike back to Falmouth and Sheetz via the same route.

Please try to RSVP via email (not required but desired) so we have an idea of who is leaving Sheetz with us and who we are picking up at Falmouth.

I’ll cancel by 9:00 AM Monday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

This ride is a combination of Larry’s Tour ‘De Farms, Chris’ Colebrook Rt. 241 Loop, and some new roads.  In a nutshell, we'll bike from Palmyra to/around Conewago Lake in Mt. Gretna and then back to Palmyra.  The overall climb of 1,070 ft. is low for 28 miles but we'll climb the hill on South Mount Pleasant Road as we leave the Colebrook area.  We’ll have a scheduled stop at the Conewago Trail in Colebrook around mile 12.

This is a scenic ride through Lebanon County farmlands and around Conewago Lake in Mt. Gretna.

The D+ and C+ groups will be starting at a different location.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.
