Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 8 Sep, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Almost Steelstown

Stats:     28 miles (1,450 ft.)

Speed:  12-13 mph

Start Location:  East Hanover Township Community Park

At 8:30 AM we’ll be starting at the East Hanover Township parking lot along with the D+ (8:30 AM) and C+ (8:00 AM) rides.

We’ll start by generally heading south to Sand Beach, east to “almost Steelstown” and then west back to the East Hanover Community Park.  We’ll tackle 2 significant hills…the first at around mile 9 and the second around mile 18 (Yes, Ken, we’ve all done these before ?).  The total climb for the ride will be about 1,450 ft. which we all scoff at because we’re in our best biking shape of the season right now.

This will be a scenic ride through mostly farmlands and along the floodplain of Swatara Creek including 2 crossings of Swatara Creek on Sand Beach Road and Blacks Bridge Road.  Note that this is a different ride than "Black's Bridge Square".

Restroom facilities are available at the start/stop.  We’ll take a scheduled break near the half-way turnaround.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 22 Sep, 2018 8:30 pm
Ride Description:

Name:   Southeast Loop

Stats:     31 miles (1,430 ft.)

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  East Hanover Township Community Park

At 8:30 AM we’ll be starting at the East Hanover Township Community Park along with the C+ ride.  The D+ ride is starting at another location.

We’ll generally do a long narrow loop to the southeast.  We’ll stop around mile 15 at the Turkey Hill across the street from Annie’s Ice Cream in Campbelltown.  We’ll have access to restroom facilities and some snacks.  From there, we’ll head west on scenic Eby Road where rumor has it that the rough areas have been patched.  Yeah!  Then we’ll head northwest back to our starting point.

At around mile 4 we’ll pass by Hope Springs Farm.  If your memory is really good, you’ll recall that we rode by the Farm last April on Earth Day and saw volunteers working (weeding, cutting, repairing…you know all the stuff we’ll be avoiding during our ride!).  Unfortunately, there was a fire a few days later that burned down their barn and it made the local news.

Hope Spring Farms will be having a Harvest Celebration Barbecue on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  It’s a fundraiser for the work that they do “to provide adults who have developmental and intellectual disabilities a day program to maximize their abilities”.   Lori and I will be heading there for lunch right after our ride and anyone is welcome to join us.  If you are interested in learning more about Hope Spring Farms barbecue, you can visit www.hopespringsfarm.org.

I'll cancel by 7:30 AM Saturday via email in the event of poor riding weather.

We will plan to go almost 40 miles, at a 14-15 mph pace, with elevation gain of almost 1,800 feet  (not excessive for this distance).  We will head west on Jonestown Road,  turn onto Manada Bottom Road to Moyer and pick up Piketown Road, our only major climb of the day.  After our descent, we will turn onto route 443 to the Gap, ride around the cemetery, and head back on Jonestown Road.

Attack the major hills and climbs on the 75– and 100-miles routes or stick to the shorter 40– and 60-mile loops. Either way, bring your climbing legs.

How will you challenge yourself this year?
