The Silver Spokes are a group of bicyclists who ride on Wednesdays. All are members of Harrisburg Bicycle Club and most are retired, hence a ride scheduled during the day. They schedule rides of 25 to 45 miles most of the year, and keep the pace to 12-14 mph. In keeping with HBC tradition, they often have lunch together after the rides
If you feel inclined, please join the Silver Spokes ride this Wednesday and make fun of one of HBC’s newest ride leaders; me! There is a first time for everything and this Wednesday appears to be as good as time as any to break this rookie in. This week’s 33-mile ride will depart from the Paxtang trail head of the Capital Area Greenbelt at 9:00am. With the cooler temperatures this time of year, 3 breaks are planned so clothing adjustments can be made and that early morning coffee can be liquidated from the body as needed.
We’ll start out heading north (counter clockwise) and view some of the improvements to the CAG as we make our way to the state hospital grounds, turning right onto the CAG extension towards Veterans Park with the first stop planned for Sheetz on Linglestown Rd (~10.5mi). Continuing east we will travel through Linglestown and Skyline View with a stop at the Turkey Hill on Allentown Blvd (~18.0mi). Our now southbound direction will have us passing Hoernerstown before turning west on the way to the 3rd planned stop at the Rutter’s store on Derry Street (25.5mi). Our route then has us going north of Rutherford, passing by “Official BBQ & Burgers” and Bishop McDevitt High School before making our way into Lawnton and the eastern area of Paxtang as we return back to the CAG trailhead.
Speaking of eastern area…I have checked with the county border agents and all you west shore folks can flash your HBC membership card while crossing the bridge and all crossing fee’s will be waved for the day and no passport or visa’s will be required. Well, no visa required unless that’s how you want to pay for lunch at City Line Diner which is where those that want to break bread together will gather. As of now, the forecast is reflecting a “precipitation free” ride. It may be a bit on the “brisk” side, but it is late October in central PA; layer accordingly. If the need to cancel should present itself, a ride cancellation notice will be sent out by 7:30am.
I work in the evenings and my not be able to respond in a timely manner…but you can leave a VM or text to 717.564.7650 if you have any questions relative to the ride (ride related questions only please, I can not provide the meaning of life but I do believe it involves a bicycle).
