With limited clouds forecasted for Wednesday and a sun rise of 7:20am, we should be basking in the sun for a 25-mile Silver Spoke ride this Wednesday the 12th. Unfortunately, I need to be on a conference call at noon, so our 9:00am start time will be meet with brisk temperatures I’m sure. The only planned break, 8.4 miles into the ride, will be at the Sheetz in Hummelstown. Heated bathrooms & food/beverage available and we can use this time to make any needed layer adjustments.
Start and stop will be at the Paxtang trail head of The Capital Area Greenbelt while we “Trek” (or Specialize, Raleigh, Cannondale, Surly, etc.) east on Derry and Pleasant View Rd on our way to Hummelstown. Departing Sheetz, Old West Chocolate Ave will help us touch “west” Hershey for our most eastern part of the ride. Being that close to my guilty pleasure of “everything” Peanut Butter and Reese, we’ll pedal in front of the factory before making our way to the Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail. That trail, between Bullfrog Valley Road and Waltonville Rd, will be the biggest climb at that point of the ride as I have tried to keep the event relatively “flat” (not to worry climbers, there is “a” big one). The trail will usher the group back to the south side of Hummelstown ultimately making our way to Fiddlers Elbow Rd (and “the” climb).
Once on Fiddlers Elbow, a right-hand turn onto Longview Dr and another on Strites Rd will produce the biggest/longest climb of the day. 380’ of gain over a 3 mile stretch with an average grade of 2% and a max of 5% will be experienced until reaching the top of Chambers Hill. Chambers Hill Rd will connect us to Harrsiburg St/Rt 441 and allows us to take in Five Sense Garden and the newly paved trail up to Paxton St.End of last week’s fresh paving of the CAG section around the Rutherford House will be used (skinny tires welcomed!) to get the pack back into Paxtang.
Plenty of eating options within walking distance of parking for those that want to fellowship afterwards. Work commitments will keep me from breaking bread but I’ll be there in spirit! I’ll be riding this route no matter what the temperature, so a cancellation notice will only go out if they missed precipitation in the forecast. Yes, I’m prepared to both lead and sweep if needed!
*** If I don’t see you Wednesday (and I’m sure that’s most, if not all, of you), have a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Year’s and looking forward to the 2019 bike season. ***
