East Shore Flex

Sun. 22 Oct, 2017 10:00 am
Ride Description:

Name:   Pine Creek Rail Trail

Stats:    52 mi.

Speed:  11-13 mph

Start Location:  Jersey Shore at Railroad Street and Humes Street

Well, this is called the East Shore Flex Ride and we’ll be really flexin’ it on Sunday morning when we start on the east shore of Pine Creek at Jersey Shore for our bike ride along the Grand Canyon of PA.

Lori & I and a couple of others are meeting 9:45 AM at the southern-most parking lot of the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Jersey Shore.  We’ll be riding by 10:00 AM along the Pine Creek Rail Trail on what will be a gorgeous, sunny and warm fall day.  We don’t get too many of these!  So, if you are able, please take advantage and join us to see the fall foliage in the Grand Canyon of PA.

It’s a generally flat ride with a slight upgrade for 26 mi. as we ride upstream at the start and a slight downgrade as we finish the last 26 mi.  The trail is packed cinders and my understanding is that it’s in good shape.  I’d recommend a bike with minimum 28 mm tires…that’s what Lori & I are using.

We’ll be enjoying lunch on the deck overlooking Pine Creek around 12:15 PM at the halfway point at the Hotel Manor Bar & Restaurant in Slate Run (www.hotel-manor.com).

Following is the itinerary with approximate times:

7:15 AM - Depart from Harrisburg (Your departure time will depend on your home location.  It’s a 2 hr. 15 min. ride from our house in Lower Paxton Township.)

     10:00 AM – Begin biking.

     12:15 PM – Lunch

1:15 PM – Begin biking back.

3:30 PM – Arrive at parking lot.

      6:00 PM – Arrive home.

For directions, you can enter “Railroad St and Humes St, Jersey Shore” in Google Maps and it'll get you to the parking lot.

Please send me a text if you are planning on joining us so we can have a bike count before leaving at 10:00 AM.

Saturday Morning C

Sat. 28 Oct, 2017 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Name:  Second Annual Tour de Fall Foliage and Halloween Special

Stats:    Approximately 30 miles with 1,400 feet of climbing

Speed:  About 12 mph

Start Location:  Memorial Lake, *Upper Road Entrance*

This Saturday looks like it might be the best one for viewing the fall foliage.  Join us at Memorial Lake, Upper Road Entrance, where restrooms are available at the parking area.

Plan to ride about 30 miles of mostly rural roads thru many wooded areas around the remote outskirts of Fort Indiantown Gap.  When we reach Swatara State Park, we will ride down into the park onto the old abandoned highway (old Route 72), cross the Waterville Bridge on the Appalachian Trail, take a short break, and leave the park on Old State Road.  We will then also check the foliage along the tree lined and paved portion of the Swatara Rail Trail before returning to Memorial Lake.

There are some hills on this ride, especially during the first half, but that's part of the beauty and most ascents are followed with a refreshing descent.  None of the hills are killers and we have all done them (or similar ones) in the past.  Ride with GPS shows this route has an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and we will probably average about 12 mph.  There are two very short areas of dirt or hard packed gravel, but each one is less than a mile and road bikes have never had any difficulty on the hard packed areas.

In recognition of Halloween, we will stop at the very old and allegedly haunted cemetery where the murder victim of the Blue Eyed Six is buried.  We will also pass two cemeteries where four bodies of the six killers were buried after they were hung.  I will provide more details before and during the ride, but if you want more information, Google "The Blue Eyed Six".

The D Plus Ride is starting at the same time and location, so couples can come together and choose separate rides, if desired.

Send me an email if you have any questions.  In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email no later than 7:00 Saturday Morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages, call, or text me before you leave home.

I think you will like this ride and hope you can make it.

Larry Riley

*Note the new starting location.  As requested by park personnel, we are meeting this week at the Upper Road Entrance.

Pace: 13-15 mph
Terrain: Rolling Terrain and Challenging Hills
Ride Description: The ride will include the rolling terrain and challenging hills of eastern Dauphin and western Lebanon counties. There will be infrequent stops and any that are necessary. Riders should be capable of sustained effort for two to three hours or more.

We will meet at the usual East Hanover Park and be ready to ride for about 40 miles at 8:30 a.m.  The estimated pace will be about 14 to 15 mph.

We again are going to have good weather.  I want to start a half hour later than the recent 8:00 a.m. starts with the intent to start the ride at 48F instead of 44F.  It should warm up nicely with mostly sunny skies forecast.  We will take on the rolling terrain North of Palmyra and Annville.  Have your bicycles ready and come ready to go.

Contact my by replying to this mailing or by calling my cell 717 712-9988, if you are running marginally late.  RSVPs are helpful if you are certain of coming, but not necessary.

For those who want to use a GPS to East Hanover Park, the address is -  8848 Jonestown Rd., Grantville, PA 17028

Directions

From I81.  Get off at Manada Exit (Hershey, Route 39).  Go South from the exit.  At the first light turn left onto Jonestown Road.  Go about 2 miles and make a left onto Manada Gap Road.  Go 150 feet or so and make a left into the Parking lot of East Hanover Park.
From Hershey.  Proceed North on Rt 39.  Crossover route 22.  After a mile or so, make a right onto Jonestown Road.  Go about 2 miles and turn left onto Manada Gap road.  Go 150 feet or so and make a left into the Parking lot of East Hanover Park and Township Municipal Center.
