Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common type of inherited ataxia. 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA gene. What begins as difficulty with balance and coordination progresses over a short period of time to a life altering loss of mobility, energy, speech and hearing, robbing children and young adults of the ability to live active lives. FA also presents serious risk of diabetes and life shortening cardiac disease. As of today, there is no treatment or cure. Fundraising to support FA research is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Saturday Morning Social

Sat. 20 Oct, 2018 8:30 am
Ride Description:

Several requests have been received to repeat last year's Halloween Ride, so let's meet at Memorial Lake, Lower Road Parking Area, for what will be our Second Annual Halloween Special.  We are doing it a week earlier this year because next weekend several of the regulars are going to the Williamsburg Ride.  Restrooms are available at the Lower Road Parking Area, as well as at some port-o-pots along the way.

Plan to ride about 28 miles of mostly rural roads thru many wooded areas around the remote outskirts of Fort Indiantown Gap.  When we reach Swatara State Park, we will ride down into the park onto the old abandoned highway (old Route 72), cross the Waterville Bridge on the Appalachian Trail, take a short break on the bridge, and leave the park on Old State Road.

There are some hills on this ride, especially during the first half, but that's part of the beauty and most ascents are followed with a refreshing descent.  None of the hills are killers and we have all done them (or similar ones) in the past.  Ride with GPS shows this route has an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and we will average between 12 and 13 mph.  My apologies to those who prefer to ride faster than 13 mph, but this is a C Ride.  We will encounter two very short areas of dirt or hard packed gravel on Tomstown and Old State Roads, but each area is less than a mile and road bikes have never had any difficulty on the hard packed areas.  Note: The recent rains have not been kind to Old State Road and there are two areas where we are probably going to have to dismount and carry our bikes around some water for 25 to 40 feet.

In recognition of Halloween, we will stop at a very old and allegedly haunted cemetery where the murder victim of the Blue Eyed Six is buried.  We will also stop at two other haunted cemeteries where four bodies of the six killers were buried after they were hung for the murder.  This is a true story about murder for money and I will provide more details before and during the ride, but if you want more information, you can Google "The Blue Eyed Six".

The D Plus ride is starting at a different location and that ride announcement is available on the club website.

Send me an email if you have any questions.  In the event of rain, I will send a cancellation email and remove the ride from the club website no later than 7:30 Saturday morning.  If the weather is questionable, check your email messages, call, or text me before you leave home.

I think you will enjoy this ride and we should be finished by noon.  I hope you can make it!
