2014 will mark the 40th anniversary of the HBC Fall Tour, so save the date now for this special event. We will once again travel to Cape May, NJ with the ride down running from Sept 30 - Oct. 3, and the weekend in Cape May from Oct. 3-5, 2014. As an added treat, this year’s Tour will coincide with Cape May’s annual Victorian Days celebration. The festivities are hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities and features “a weekend of exciting and entertaining activities from history to murder mysteries, plus historic house tours, food and wine events and much, much more.” And don’t forget all of the usual fun of trolley tours, Alpaca farms, kite flying, shopping, eating at the wonderful variety of restaurants, checking out the latest brews at the Cape May Brewery and just relaxing on the beach!
Sept 30 - Oct 5, 2014
Registration for Fall Tour is now open!! Over the past months we have highlighted several of our favorite highlights of this annual tradition. We hope that this has helped show why this trip has been such a great success for the past 40 years. If you’ve never been on Tour before, this is a great time to try something new. We pair all of our new riders with a seasoned Tour veteran who can guide you through preparing for the trip. We are also offering luggage transport, so no worries if you don’t have panniers or a way to haul your gear each day. If you’ve been on Tour before, we hope you have many wonderful memories and want to join us again to create new memories.
40th Anniversary Fall Tour Jersey
Whether you are participating in the ride or not, we are excited about a clothing design that has been created to commemorate the event. You are more than welcome to purchase any item offered. Deena Davis has created a wonderful and cool looking design and Champion Systems will be producing the items.
Here are some changes from how this process was done in the past:
1. You will be ordering through an On-Line Store
2. There will be several different types of jerseys, vests and jackets available for you
3. You will pay for your items directly through the store
On May 1st, the HBC Fall Tour store will open. You will be able to choose from sleeveless, short sleeve or long sleeve jerseys or a Champion-Sys jacket or vest.
The web site to log onto is http://custom.champ-sys.com/Login/en-US/. On the right side of the screen will be a place for Team Members to login with a temporary user name and password.
The temporary username is: falltour2014 and the password is hbc.
Then you will be prompted to create your own username and password for your own account within the HBC Account.
Review the items available to order from our store and place your order. Order as many as you'd like. You will pay for your order directly through this on-line store.
For a helpful walk-through, please visit www.champ-sys.com/pages/cs-direct-walkthrough-members.
The HBC Fall Tour store will open on Thursday, May 1, 2014 and close at midnight on July 14, 2014 at which point production on the clothing will begin.
The orders will be shipped to Alice Graham in mid-September for distribution to the six pack leaders, or if not participating in the ride, she will get your item(s) to you.
The Spring Fling has been canceled due to lack of a coordinator. The Spring Fling has been an anual event for as long as any of the Ops Committee can remember. Mark Riordan thinks it has been going on even before he was born.
For many years, Bill Engle has coordinated/led the Saturday Morning Social ride which leaves from the Grantville Restaurant. In more recent years, a C+ ride was added, leaving from the same location. We thank Bill for his many years of service to the club in coordinating these rides. However, all things change and effective the end of October, these rides will no longer be considered a "regularly scheduled ride" and will become "email" rides. This means they will be announced via an e-mail distribution list, typically by the Wednesday before the Saturday ride, if it will be held. Larry Riley will be coordinating the "C" Social ride and Dan Hassell the C+ Ride. Please sign up to get on the distribution list for these rides if you are interested by updating your website profile as explained here.
Gorgeous weather and pumped up riders made for another successful race up Kings Gap! On Saturday August 31st, forty-five registered participants challenged the 3.3 mile course to the summit of Kings Gap where the proceeds of close to $700 went to benefit The Friends of Kings Gap, a volunteer organization that maintains the beauty of the park. Temperatures in the morning were PERFECT for racing, at right around 70 degrees. Riders took off one minute apart on their "race of truth" to the summit, blazing across the finish line. This year our top male rider was again John Selus from Mechanicsburg with a time of 11:22, which was 5 seconds faster than his winning time last year! On the female side, a new challenger emerged, Alissa Gindlesperger from Frederick MD. Her winning time was 14:36. Congratulations to John and Alissa!
The weather forecast for Sunday, Sept. 18 looked pretty threatening but it turned out to be a great day to ride. Yes, there were a few light sprinkles here and there but not enough to “dampen” our enthusiasm. We had 405 people register and it sure sounded like everyone was having a good time. Dave Young’s chicken corn soup got rave reviews as did the home made cookies, walk-around tacos and other great food. We got lots of good comments about the enjoyable routes, too. The financial report on the Century isn’t finalized yet, but we’ll post that at a later time.
In the meantime, we owe a big thanks to The Pedal Pusher Bike Shop and Recycle Bicycle for their help with bike repairs, Wegmans and Giant Food Stores for their generous donations of gift cards, and a big pat on the back is due to all the hard-working volunteers who make this such an enjoyable event for the participants.
And of course the Three Creek Century wouldn’t happen at all without the Century Committee Coordinators:
Chair – Tim Roden
Co-chair – Alan Adelman
Sags – Matt Winslow
Food – Dave and Lois Young
Rest stops – Ed Reynolds
Registration - Donna Finn
Routes – Terry Drachbar
Parking – Dick Norford
Cookies – Diana Bermingham
Rider Hospitality - Kelly Szymczyk
Volunteers and Publicity - Marilyn Chastek
T-shirts – Howard Ross
Check out the Three Creek Century and HBC Facebook pages for pictures from the event. Post yours there, too.
