Harrisburg Bicycle Club
As many of you already know Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg (RBH) recently started a capital campaign to raise $250,000.
For the past 10 years RBH has been operating out of donated abandoned warehouses. These buildings have no heat, bathrooms, or running water. We install basic electricity at our own expense. We have had to move several times in the past few years when the owner either sells the building or finds another use for it.
The building we are in currently is 2 years behind in taxes and we are not sure what is going to happen.
We started the capital campaign in order to purchase our own facility to stabilize our situation.
Our vision is to find a building that can house more than just RBH. Our goal is to find a building that can become a center for bicycle advocacy, safety, and education and provide a permanent home for all the local bicycle organizations, including HBC.
The good news is that we have found a building that we believe meets all of our needs. The bad news is that we need to greatly accelerate our fund raising efforts. We need to raise $100,000 as quickly as possible.
The building is located at 100 N. 13th St. Harrisburg. It was originally built around 1940 and was the home of Central Publishing House. It has about 12,000 sq. ft. The asking price is $130,000.
The building is currently owned by Habitat For Humanity. Habitat has put over $400,000 into super structure improvements to include a new rubber roof, replacement of floor joists, etc. There are currently no utilities hooked up in the building but gas, water, sewer, and electric are all run into the building. The building is stripped to the studs but nothing that can’t be fixed over time. The all brick building is far safer than anything we have ever occupied.
In addition we would own 9 adjacent lots, basically half of a city block in total. Plenty of room for off street parking, bicycle rodeos, a place to practice safe riding techniques, etc. The second floor has plenty of room to make meeting rooms, hold bicycle clinics, storage etc. There is also a full basement.
