About this event

Rail Trail Bike Ride on the Lehigh Gorge from Jim Thorpe PA to Buttermilk Falls and Back - Thursday October 17, 2024 -

Enjoy fall colors in the PA North East mountain area

Distance 30 miles, Average Speed 8 – 10 mph
Learning to Linger Pace so we may enjoy the Fall colors!

Join Karl Martz for a bike ride on the Lehigh Gorge trail in a mountain pass beside the Lehigh River. Meet at 7:30am on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at the parking lot of the Manada Hill Diner, and be ready to depart at 8:00 am. The address of the restaurant is 257 North Hershey Road, Harrisburg PA 17112. The restaurant is on Route 39, just south of the I-81 ramp for Route 39. The restaurant is adjacent to the La Quinta Inn. We will carpool from the restaurant parking lot to drive to Jim Thorpe.

In Jim Thorpe, park at the north end of the public parking — located behind the Pocono Mountains Visitor Center and Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. The parking fee is $8. We should be at the trailhead to begin the ride around 9:30 am. - 9:45 AM. The trail begins at the north end of the parking lot away from the train station. There are rest rooms in and next to the train station. Over half of the trail is shaded and alongside a river valley. We will bike north past Rockport to Buttermilk Falls where we will take a snack break. Rockport is along the Lehigh Gorge trail between Jim Thorpe and White Haven. The falls are about 1/2 mile past Rockport.  After our break we will turn around and bike back down to Jim Thorpe. There will hopefully be good fall color in mountains around Jim Thorpe this time in October.

Bring a snack to eat on the trail and plenty of water.

When we return to Jim Thorpe, we will walk a few blocks to the “Myst - Hibachi, Sushi and Gastro Pub” on Susquehanna Street for a late lunch/early dinner. You can view the menu here - https://www.mysthibachisushipub.com/menu/
This is a “Learning to Linger” bike ride. It will be evening when we return to the Harrisburg area.
