About this event
Serious and fatal crashes involving people walking, rolling, and bicycling have increased in recent years. In Pennsylvania, serious vulnerable road user (VRU) crashes increased by 47% between 2015 and 2021, prompting PennDOT to develop a Safety Education Initiative.
This session delivers a practical train-the-trainer model that participants can use to deliver engaging pedestrian and bicycle safety instruction for 2nd/3rd and 9th/10th grade students.
Participants will learn how the lesson combines classroom discussion, video, and interactive skills practice to reinforce lifelong safety habits. The session will cover core pedestrian and bicycle safety concepts for 2nd/3rd and 9th/10th grade students, along with strategies for empowering, culturally sensitive instruction that can be adapted to rural, suburban, and urban settings.
Attendees will leave with implementation checklists, lesson planning guidance, interactive teaching strategies, and a replicable framework for launching VRU safety education locally. Attendees will also receive an introduction to the train-the-trainer manual and practical tips for instructor preparation and program logistics.
