If you can‘t make Gary Brinton‘s ride in the morning, consider joining us for an evening "sleepy potato" ride Monday. Departure will be at 5:30 PM from the Fishing Creek Community Center, located at 1361 Fishing Creek Valley Rd, Harrisburg 17112. This location is on the south side of Fishing Creek Valley Rd, between Frog Hollow Rd and the entry for Boyd‘s Big Tree preserve. There is a porta-potty at this location. Our route will go east on Fishing Creek Valley Rd, with a climb up Sleepy Hollow Rd and a descent on Appleby Rd. We‘ll loop around the Manada Bottom Rd area, then on the return we‘ll tackle Potato Valley Rd. Total distance will be 25 to 26 miles, and elevation will be around 1300 ft. It‘s tough to predict an average speed for this ride but I‘d guess 12 to 14 mph. Regardless, we will take care of each other and leave no rider behind. If you‘ve done this route before, you know that the climbs up Sleepy Hollow and Potato Valley are challenging, but doable for a C rider. If you‘ve not done a C ride before, this isn‘t the route to start with. The weather prediction is for a beautiful evening. If you have questions about the ride or route, contact Ride Leader Chris Wright at cjwright1919@gmail.com

The Friday Night Social for Friday July 5, 2024 will include dinner at the Millworks restaurant, located at 340 Verbeke St, Harrisburg 17102. There is ample parking on both the east and west sides of the restaurant, and along Verbeke St. in front of the restaurant. Since we‘ll be ending the ride at the Millworks, you may want to bring along a bike lock to secure your bike while we are dining. There are also several parking garages in the area if you prefer to use them. If you plan on joining us for dinner at the Millworks, please respond to me before Friday so I can adjust the dinner reservation as needed. The ride will depart at 6:15 pm from the parking lot on the west side of the Millworks building, which is to your left as you face the restaurant. Our route will take us downtown on the Greenbelt path, turn around at PennDOT and drop down to the concrete along the river, then circle City Island. We‘ll go further north and jump onto 2nd St to view some architecture, then come back to mid-town on the Greenbelt path again. The route is about 11 miles long and has less than 250 ft of climbing. There is a chance of rain on Friday, so if necessary a cancellation would be sent out by 5:15 pm. Of course, we eat whether we ride or not! Feel free to contact me for any questions. Hope to see you there! Chris Wright cjwright1919@gmail.com

The First Sunday of every month throughout the year, ride the Capital Area Greenbelt around Harrisburg. This is a great way to learn the route with a group of friendly riders. The loop is 18 miles of trail (some on road, some off road) mostly paved with many stops at crossroads. The ride leaves at 1:00 pm from the trailhead in Paxtang off Derry St (behind the City Line Diner, 3302 Derry St, Hbg 17111). If the spur routes are added to the loop (riders vote to add or not) the total mileage increases to 23-24 miles. The pace of the ride is average 10 mph (D+). We ride faster on flats and slower on hills. The terrain has a few hills. We ride the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. No rider left behind. Sign up for email notification due to the date change every month and to get cancellations due to weather or other possible reasons. Helmets are required. Be sure to pump your tires and know how to shift your gears before you come since there is a hill in the beginning of the ride.

Sorry for the late notice, but I just realized that no one had signed up to lead tomorrow‘s FNS and I offered to fill in. So let‘s plan to meet in the parking lot of the Mechanicsburg Giant at 5301 Simpson Ferry Road. Be ready to ride by 6:15 p.mm. This will be a flat ride through several of the local neighborhoods on quiet, residential streets. The distance will probably only be 10-12 miles since we have to be back for dinner by 7:30 p.m. Dinner will be at Hellenic Kouzina, 500 E. Main Street, Mechanicsburg. https://www.hellenickouzina.com/ They are noted for their delicious Greek specialties but also offer turkey burgers and salads. And their desserts are to die for! If it rains, we can still meet for dinner at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Starting from a new location we will run a route out to Memorial Lake and return for a total of 48 miles. This route or one very similar, the leader has taken and led rides on numerous times in the past 15 years. However, this is a new route for the Grantville area rides. While we won‘t be starting near Grantville we will pass through it. We are starting at 8:00 AM, as the current forecast is for a high of 90F later in the day and we want time to do other things later in the day. The route - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/47680552 For anyone interested, there is a pool, shower and bath at the start location, so bring you swim suit and a towel if you want to swim. I can tell that bicycle shorts make great swim wear. Also, refreshments will be offered afterwards. Riders may also, have family members come. If so, have them bring a dish to share. Those coming and planning to stay should have a swim suit and towel, if they intend to use the inground pool.
